A great hike to do in the Haleakala crater is down sliding sands and then up switchbacks. It takes roughly 4 to 5 hours and allows you to see a vast stretch of varied terrain. Park at the Halemau’u parking lot at about 8,000 feet, then stand by the designated hitch hiker spot, which is a short walk from the parking lot, get a ride to the top to start hiking down sliding sands (which is much better then hiking up it). Head towards Holua cabin and the up the switchbacks back to your car. Enjoy. Namaste
